In addition to a fine jewelry collection, the Baokha store location also has its own art gallery where the unique and beautiful artworks of famous Vietnamese painters and sculptors are displayed. For our virtual art gallery, we are pleased to present the following featured artists. Please note that due to color degradation from scanning and reprinting as well as variations in computer monitors, some photographed images do not represent the true color of the actual painting or artwork.
Dinh
Cuong (din--ku-ong)
was born in Vietnam in 1939, and arrived in the United States in 1989. An artist,
writer, and teacher, Dinh Cuong was one of the founders in 1966 of the Young
Painters Association. This association, independent of the Vietnamese government,
mounted exhibitions at private spaces in the late 1960s and 1970s. Trained at
the Hue school of Fine Arts, Cuong's early work was a thick, "impasto figuration"
edging toward abstraction in its fluidity and energy. Cuong has spent much of
his time in the United States visiting museums and galleries. He notes, "I
was thrilled to be standing next to the paintings of masters. In all my years
of teaching art, it was always through reproductions." Cuong prizes the
individuality of his expressionistic style, which interprets the inner reality
of a subject. "Mystery is the main theme of most of my pictures."
Most of Cuong's paintings are oils on canvas, which help to capture the mystical,
abstract, and beautiful expressions of each brush stroke. Cuong has held several
one-man shows in France, Vietnam, and the United States, and has received many
arts awards both nationally and internationally. Currently, the artist resides
in Annandale, Virginia with his wife and family. For questions or comments about
the paintings, Dinh Cuong can be reached via E-MAIL.

Born
in Saigon, Vietnam in 1947, Khuu Duc (coo--duk)
received his education in Fine Arts at the National School of Decoration,
Fine Arts in Vietnam. He came to the United States in 1975, and tool elective
courses in Commercial Arts and Ceramics at Northern Virginia College, Art Leagues
New York, and Art Leagues Virginia. Duc became intrigued with working in clay
and creating sculptures and pottery with his own hands. He was introduced to
the Japanese art form called Raku by his instructor Dennis Davis who spent many
years teaching in Japan. In 1992, after receiving five Awards for his decorative
plates in ceramics, Duc's desire for more freedom and creativity in his works
led him to experiment with Raku using a more direct exposure to fire and heat.
The result has been a unique creation of his one-of-a-kind artworks. Duc found
Raku more challenging and exciting to work with, and has since then worked at
evolving and developing his own style by combining the traditional white crackles
with the brilliant colors of copper matte finish. Khuu Duc's Raku has marvelously
unique quality to them, gathering East and West fine arts on ceramics. Duc stated
that "Raku allows me a wonderful satisfaction of my own aesthetic sensibility:
the desire to surround myself with handmade objects that are simply beautiful
to look at, objects that result from the wonderful combination of the five elements
of nature (fire, earth, water, metals, and plants)." For questions or comments
about the raku ceramics, Khuu Duc can be reached via E-MAIL.
The following photographs are a few of Duc's most recent raku artworks.
